The World Figure Skating Championships
have been held every year since 1896, except during World War I (1915-1921),
World War II (1940-1946) and 1961 when the Championships were canceled
due to the entire United States team of skaters, officials, leaders and
chaperones being killed in a plane crash just outside of Belgium.
The USFSA Memorial Fund was established to honor their memory. |
